Thoughtful Additions & Interiors

Completed: 2018

Location: Mendocino

Priorities: Open up the living room, dining, kitchen to make a more inclusive public space; create an entryway that provides a sense of arrival before entering the main space; add to footprint to enlarge back bedroom into a master suite; make girls' bedrooms have a unique feature to create a sense of refuge; and incorporate more closets!

This 1950’s Mendocino Bungalow was dark, cramped and too small for the owners. The opportunity to bring in more light and air opened up after it was decided to remove the existing roof. The master suite addition was an expansion of a tiny 3rd bedroom, so there was only an additional 300 sf. added to the existing footprint. The reconfiguration gave each daughter a spacious bedroom with a bay window seat as well as a modernized bathroom, a new master suite & unified great room including the kitchen, dining & living rooms.

The kitchen and living were separated in an L shape that was converted into a “great room” single space for the family to be together in the evenings with friends during dinner preparation, enhancing the feeling of inclusion for all.

The entire building was painted white, in various shades, to create a light filled, airy feeling when the owners come home from a long day at work or at school. The living room looks out on the family’s historical Camilla bush that provides privacy from the adjacent road and lovely flowers in the tall window bank that appear as a changing work of art.
