Drifter-Reef Shingle Style
Seamless Additions & Remodel
Completed: 2017
Location: Mendocino
Priorities: Create a breakfast nook that complemented the existing Shingle Style house. Create a wine cellar/exercise room in the crawl space. Create a large master bedroom closet addition that complemented the form and volume of the existing Shingle Style house
Mendocino master craftsman builder Bill Rienstra constructed this fantastic residence in his own hybrid of Shingle Style & Japanese Country in 1997. The cluster of volumes, steep mansard rooves and hipped dormers with Japanese eave detailing was challenging to design various additions that would fit with the custom style.
Beginning with an elegant breakfast nook added to the kitchen, Debra also designed a wine cellar & exercise room in the crawl space. The two story bedroom/closet addition was the final challenge, adding volume, marrying roof pitches, using craftsman detailing while preserving a Romeo & Juliet pocket deck on the second floor office balcony.
Ocean Eryie overlooks the Pacific Ocean with sweeping views to the north and south of the Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse. The overall volume of the home is balanced and the additions blend in as well proportioned extensions of this spectacular home.
